Auckland Emergency Management has an Emergency Response Plan for an eruption from the Auckland Volcanic Field.
Due the large uncertainty around where and how the next eruption will occur in the Auckland Volcanic Field, in planning, emergency managers have to consider the risk to a larger area than will be impacted by the next eruption.
Note: There are many people and assets EXPOSED to the next Auckland Volcanic Field eruption, but it will likely IMPACT only a fraction of them.
The extent of the volcanic threat zone includes all of the Auckland Volcanic Field, a 5km buffer zone, and the impact area of the deadliest and destructive volcanic hazards. This is the area exposed to the deadliest impacts of an eruption, but the area of direct impact will be only a fraction of this area. This is the area used as a basis for evacuation planning.
