Many visitors and residents of Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland have “visit every volcano” on their bucket list.
However, many are quarried or hidden away, and it takes a lot of digging to find them.
The Tūpuna Maunga (ancestral mountains) / volcanic cones of Tāmaki hold a paramount place in the historical, spiritual, ancestral and cultural identity of the thirteen iwi and hapū of Ngā Mana Whenua o Tāmaki Makaurau (the Māori tribes of Auckland). For more information on the immense cultural significance of these treasured places, please visit The Tūpuna Maunga Authority.
We are grateful to Bruce Hayward, geologist and author of Volcanoes of Auckland: A Field Guide, who compiled the research into each of the volcanoes.
Please share your photos and journeys with us on our Facebook page.
Downloadable checklist
Here’s a handy downloadable checklist with a list of the volcanoes. We’ve grouped the volcanic vents roughly by location and given you an address or GPS coordinate for you to put into your favourite mapping app.
You can either print this checklist out or download it to a smart device to take with you on your adventures throughout the Auckland Volcanic Field. Device users can tap on some of the quick reference icons throughout the list to find links to additional information on accessing certain volcanoes, and what to do once you are there. It also includes information on trips for pushchairs, wheelchairs, and people with limited mobility.
